In Chinese students’ writing, the above shown wrong use of ‘is because’ regularly occurs. This is an error caused by Chinese mother tongue influence, as the Chinese expression ‘是因為(is because) is often used in a similar Chinese sentence. There are two ways to correct such a mistake: either using ‘because’ to start a subordinate clause that states the reason, or starting a new sentence with ‘This is because’. As we can see from the examples, when ‘is because’ occurs, the professionals normally use the expressions of ‘this/that is because’ or ‘it is because’. The word this/that/it, referring back to a sentence written earlier, serves as the subject of an independent new sentence.
